It would be helpful if we could add properties to Asset Types. This would allow us to provide more info to users about the asset like setpoints, manufacturer info, etc.

Would also like to know this. What is the recommended way to add asset information (eg manufacturer, Make/Model, location, Last service date, model performance characteristics and limits, etc) to an asset?

  Meta data or properties are applied at a tag level. These properties could come from the data source when they are logged with the data. If they are not available from the logging source you would either have to import them with a CSV file using the admin, or you would configure the Views service to read properties from an external source.
