Missing 'End of Event' Email Notifications

Hello, we have been configuring a bunch of Event alerts for the first time.  We are now trying to fine tune our trigger parameters and noticed something strange.  We implemented Minimum event durations of 30 and 60 seconds for a number of sensors and set the Frequency to 'Value Change' and 'Only when specific tags change' for the target tag value, thinking this would save calculation load on the Canary server.

However, we're seeing a weird behavior where an event will trigger, and we'll get a Start of event 'email, but then the next tag value transitions will be back into spec and then back out again, so next we see another 'Start of event' email and maybe just one 'End of event' email for the second event.  Our initial troubleshooting makes me think this could be happening because our sensors are hovering very close to the alert notification limits we set.

I don't fully understand how the Event Frequency / Value Change / Only when specific tags change' configuration is playing into this.  I am going to try switching some of the events to 'Value Change > 'Any Tag values change', although I'm not clear how expansive the "Any" is here.  Does that mean any tag within Canary at all?  Or any tag that's used in the Calculation (which is just our one sensor value tag).

I've read thru this KB help article, but I think we're bumping into some subtleties of how this feature works.

Any help or advice anyone can offer would be appreciated.

    Hi ,

If the event is only using one tag, then there would be no difference between "Any Tag values change" or "Only when specific tags change". I would just use the "Any" option then. The "Any" option is for any tag within the calculation group. If you use the "specific tags" option, you would have to designate which tags you would want the calculation to trigger on.

When using the minimum duration setting, the Start trigger has to be True for that amount of time before it considers it an event. At which point, you would get an email notification that the event has triggered. The event concludes when either the Start trigger is False, or if you have configured a separate End trigger and that is True. By default, we only send out an email when the Event starts. You would have to edit the email template to send an alert when it concludes.

Here is an article on How to Create an Event if you haven't looked at it already: https://helpcenter.canarylabs.com/t/83y8gp0/how-to-create-an-event-version-24.

Hi  , ahh okay that's helpful thank you.  Good to know this probably isn't due to either of those trigger tag settings.

Yes, we've been using separate End Triggers for almost all our events and definitely have an Event End email template as we receive them sometimes.

We are seeing events trigger for conditions that look like they do not meet the minimum event duration we configured.  Any thoughts on why events are intermittently getting created for these conditions that don't meet what we've configured?

I don't know how it would be able to do this. What does it have stored for the Duration in the event table within the Canary Admin?

@Steve Mason the events are showing in the Events table as less than our configured Minimum Duration (60 seconds for this sensor)

Strange. I would suggest opening a support ticket with support@canarylabs.com. Include the link to this post. It may be beneficial to look at the %ProgramData%\Canary\Calculations\Calculations.sqlite file.
